R&B duo The Amours have teamed with The Recording Academy to release a cover of Fantasia‘s 2004 classic “Free Yourself.”

The performance-style cover, filmed in front of a colorful backdrop, is yet another example of why the sister duo should be included in conversations about the new school of R&B vocalists. The way they make the song their own without losing its essence is commendable.

“Reimagining ‘Free Yourself’ was a literal dream! When we saw that it was on the list of songs we could choose from, it was a no-brainer!” The Amours exclusively tell Rated R&B.

“What Fantasia, Missy Elliott, and Jazmine Sullivan did was masterful. They’re R&B royalty! We simply just wanted to pay homage to some of our heroes in the best way possible. If you’re ever covering a song by them, baby, you better be prepared to SING! We hope we did the song justice!”

As indicated above, “Free Yourself,” the title track to Fantasia’s debut album, was written and produced by Missy Elliott. It includes writing support from Craig Brockman and Nisan Stewart.

Jazmine Sullivan sings background vocals on the liberating anthem, along with Elliott. The Grammy-nominated song peaked at No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

The Amours’ rendition of “Free Yourself” arrives after releasing their Changes EP on April 26.

“The process of formulating this project has been one of the best experiences of our lives,” they said. “We were able to really dig deep and showcase a level of vulnerability we have yet to reveal to our fans.”

They added, “In the midst of this process, we’ve gone through a whirlwind of changes. From the EP title to the shift in songs, scratching everything and starting over. We’ve embraced every single change we’ve had to endure.”

Changes was executive produced by Grammy-winning producer Camper and includes a feature from emerging R&B singer TA Thomas.

In June, The Amours will embark on a mini tour, hitting major cities like New York City, Chicago, and Atlanta. (Their upcoming tour dates are provided below the video.)
