Lalah Hathaway has returned with her eighth album, Vantablack, via Hathaway Entertainment/SRG-ILS Group.
The 16-track offering includes the singles “So In Love,” “Mood For You” featuring MC Lyte and “I AM.”
Speaking on the latter track, which is an uplifting disco anthem, Hathaway notes, “I Am, I think people will be delighted to hear me with some tempo! I’m always trying to figure out how to apply these lush tones over dance music! How can I be featured on the subwoofer in your G Wagon? This is a four on the floor full of positive affirmation. I think I may have cracked the code!”
The album features additional appearances by WILLOW, Rapsody, Common, Michael McDonald, Gerald Albright, and Phonte.
“Vantablack was always the name of the project,” says Hathaway. “I started reframing how I saw color in terms of being the blackest I’ve ever been, and even though I’m steeped in who I am, it doesn’t exclude the other things that make up the sum of me. Similar to how all the music around me informs the Black music that I create. So it’s all a melting pot of all of me.”
Vantablack is the follow-up to Hathaway’s 2018 album, honestly (deluxe edition), an expanded version of her 2017 LP. The album spawned three Grammy nominations: Best R&B Album, Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Made For Love”) and Best R&B Performance (“Y O Y”).
On Aug. 24, Hathaway will kick off her Vantablack Tour in Birmingham, Alabama, at BJCC Concert Hall. The 18-city tour will make additional stops in U.S. cities, including New Orleans, Houston, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. The tour concludes Sept. 28 at Charleston Music Hall in Charleston, South Carolina. Tickets for the tour go on sale today (June 14) at 10 a.m. local time.
