Progressive soul singer Black Hibiscus has released his new single “FORLӦRN” via MNRK Records.
The ’80s-tinged ballad, produced by Black Hibiscus, is built on a resonant bass, languid percussion, and a wailing electric guitar.
Lyrically, “FORLÖRN” underscores the residual emotions that may arise well into a healing journey following a breakup. It’s the push and pull between attempting to move on and longing for what was.
“But it’s over now I should move / Start forgetting too / Colors on the polaroid are fading / Anxious maybe every day was faking / I’m afraid to say it to your face,” he sings on the Prince-coded track.
Regarding his new single, the Nigerian-born artist tells Rated R&B, “‘FORLӦRN’ captures that bittersweet moment when the memory of someone starts to blur, but the emotions are still vivid. It’s about the space between holding on and letting go, where love becomes a ghost that lingers, even as the details fade.”
“FORLӦRN” is the third single from Black Hibiscus’ album Growing Pains, which releases Oct. 18. The 10-track project will include the previously shared “Tension” featuring Dachelle and “Don’t Wanna Miss U” with Mai Anna.
Speaking on “TENSION,” he noted, “The track is a conversation between two people attempting to sort through the invisible tension that keeps them apart. The lush guitars and soft digital percussion set the stage for a sensual back and forth.”
As for “DON’T WANNA MISS U,” which takes note from production by The Neptunes and Timbaland, Black Hibiscus shared, “That song gave me the most hell. I was learning to create that ‘bounce.’ It was focusing on energy rather than softer emotions.”
According to press materials, Growing Pains “takes us on a journey of this self-growth using a backdrop of tranquil nature and the hectic New York Cityscape vying for our attention. It’s hectic, experimental, intimate and always unpredictable, while showcasing a thoroughly unique voice at its heart.”
Growing Pains is the follow-up to Black Hibiscus’ EP Fast Love, which was released in January. In 2022, he released his first album, The End of the World, which included his popular track “Basquiat.”
The rising artist has been promoting Growing Pains as a special guest on breakout R&B duo Bathe‘s Inside Voices Tour.
