Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and musician PJ Morton stopped by the Tamron Hall Show on Tuesday (Nov. 12) for an exclusive daytime performance of his song “I Found You.”

Stationed behind his signature piano, Morton delivered a stunning rendition of the ballad, which even had host Tamron Hall singing along in the audience.

“I Found You” is lifted from Morton’s latest album, Cape Town to Cairo, which he recorded during his month-long trip in Africa, where he visited South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and Egypt.

While at the Tamron Hall Show, Morton also discussed his new memoir, Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, which is out in stores today. The memoir chronicles the New Orleans native’s journey from a preacher’s kid to a genre-spanning artist. (Morton exclusively revealed the book cover on the show earlier this year.)

During his interview with Hall, Morton opened up about overcoming an “unspoken expectation” of following his father’s footsteps to become a pastor.

“For me, the path was set out for me. I mean, not only was I his son, but I was his only son. I was named after the man,” Morton said. “And that’s what happened: Sons took over their dad’s churches. For me, I just was hearing something different. I was like, ‘Man, I don’t want to disappoint people.’ But I felt like I couldn’t not do what I felt in my soul.”

He continued, “Like, I had to do this. It wasn’t that I just wanted to do it. It was a need to get these things out. And so my father, man, thank God for him. That conversation, when he said, ‘You don’t have to be me,’ [that] unlocked the rest of my life, unlocked my career. I’m just forever grateful.”

In a press statement, Morton expressed what he hoped listeners would gather from the book. “I hope Saturday Night, Sunday Morning will inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter the challenges they face,” he said. “Looking back on my journey reminds me how powerful it is to follow your path, and I’m excited to share this reflection with others.”

Saturday Night, Sunday Morning: Staying True to Myself from the Pews to the Stage is available via Hachette Book Group.
