Robin Thicke has earned his first RIAA certification in six years.
The Grammy-nominated singer’s third album, Something Else, has been certified gold for selling over 500,000 equivalent units. It’s Thicke’s second RIAA award for an album since The Evolution of Robin Thicke was crowned platinum in 2007.
Something Else was released Sept. 30, 2008, via Star Trek/Interscope Records. The album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, where it spent 28 weeks on the chart. It also debuted at No. 3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Something Else included the ’70s-tinged single “Magic,” which peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart and No. 59 on the Hot 100. The album’s second single, “The Sweetest Love,” also reached No. 2 on the Adult R&B Airplay.
Speaking on Something Else, Thicke told Billboard in 2008, “These new songs are talking about a time for change and hope; to get away from all the sadness, loneliness and depression that I used to live in. This album expresses the celebration I’m going through and the healing I want to give to people. It’s also about what’s going on in the world with politics and race.”
He continued, “The closer Barack Obama gets to the White House, it’s all about race now. They’re all trying to make it seem like he is playing the race card when he’s just an American running for president. How my wife and I still aren’t able to walk in Mississippi without people looking at us like we’re crazy. The laws may have changed, but the whispering hasn’t.”

As mentioned above, this is Thicke’s first RIAA award since his 2013 hit “Blurred Lines,” which was certified diamond in 2018 for selling over 10 million units.
In other music-related news, Thicke released his new single, “I Know What To Do,” in August. The self-penned track is the lead single from his upcoming ninth album, which is slated to arrive on Valentine’s Day 2025.
Thicke, who is managed by Roc Nation, revealed that he got exciting feedback from Jay-Z about the song. “I remember I sent the record to him. I rarely ever send Jay a record, but I had a feeling about this one, so I sent it to him. I asked him, ‘Is this what I think this is?’ He was like, ‘Yeah, that’s exactly what you think it is (laughs).’ And he sent me a video concept, too. Shout out to Jay!” Thicke told Revolt.
Thicke’s new album will follow 2021’s On Earth, and In Heaven. “The motivation of this project is about home and the fact that my parents got divorced at a very young age,” Thicke told Black America Web about his forthcoming LP. “I mean, when I was very young, around seven years old, and that I’ve been trying to replace that or to get that feeling back.”
