Alternative R&B singer-songwriter UMI has inked a deal with Epic Records. She joins a roster that includes Sade, Mario, Givēon, Tyla, Mariah The Scientist and more.
“Two words come to mind when I think of UMI: Peaceful and Electrifying,” says Ezekiel Lewis, president of Epic Records. “The energy that will greet you upon an encounter with UMI is somehow perfectly encapsulated in the music she has recorded for this project. Everyone wants peace, yet everyone wants excitement. So, we believe that everyone who finds UMI, will want UMI. Epic is more than happy to support her vision.”
Along with her new label announcement, UMI has released her new single “Hard Truths” featuring 6LACK. Produced by HARV and Vron, “Hard Truths” is a soul-searching meditation on what really matters in life.
“You could have a nice house, but going home lonely / Closet full of nice clothes, who’s holding you closely? You could cash out, that’s nice, partyin’ all night / But you’re empty inside, are you alive?” UMI sings in the chorus.

“‘Hard Truths’ delves into the complexities of self-awareness, the emptiness of materialism, and the importance of genuine connection,” UMI explains. “Alongside 6LACK, who is featured on the record, the lyrics explore the contrast between external appearances and internal realities. Emphasizing the need to confront uncomfortable truths about oneself and relationships.”
“Hard Truths” marks the start of a new musical chapter for UMI since releasing her EP talking to the wind in 2024. “Talking to the wind is an EP that has felt like a leaf in the wind,” she explained. “Each of the songs were created at a time where I didn’t know exactly where I was going or what I was creating for.”
Following her EP, UMI teamed up with V of BTS for ‘Wherever U R,’ BAEKHYUN of EXO on ‘Do What You Do,’ and Raveena for ‘Lost My Focus.’ She also released ‘Butterfly II’ in November 2024.
UMI released her debut album, Forest in the City, via Keep Cool/RCA Records in 2022.
