As summer falls, Jai’Len Josey brings the heat with new single “Freak” via Def Jam Recordings.
Produced by Tricky Stewart and Ben Parris, “Freak” drips with flirtation as Josey teases a potential love interest to turn sweet talk into something more.
“You said, ‘Tonight you best be ready for the movie’ / Well Baby, get to going / ‘Cause I’m your little freak,” Josey sings. Her vocals soar over the pulsating backdrop, reminiscent of the powerhouses of the ’80s house era.
Josey co-wrote “Freak” Stewart, Parris and Theron Thomas. Speaking on her new track, Josey exclusively tells Rated R&B, “This is only the beginning of what lies ahead, and I owe immense gratitude to Tricky Stewart and Theron Thomas for opening the door, believing in my vision and bringing ‘Freak’ to life!”

“Freak” is the follow-up to “New Girl,” which was released in April. “‘New Girl’ is about that cute feeling you get as a girl when you first start talking to a guy. It’s like, ‘I saw you. You saw me. What’s the next move?’” Josey explained.
“Musically, the track mixes R&B and U.K. garage. A lot of my experiences come from underground New York and the music I heard when I was on Broadway. I’m bending those ballroom pockets with R&B and creating a world of my own.”
Both tracks are set to appear on Josey’s debut album, Serial Romantic, which will release Oct. 31. Her forthcoming project is executive produced by Tricky Stewart (Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Rihanna).
Serial Romantic will follow Josey’s 2023 EP, Southern Delicacy. The latter project, released April 14, 2023, includes her delicious track “Good Soup” and the intoxicating “Pay For My Drink.”
“Southern Delicacy symbolizes growth. It’s the story of me, and all the situations and relationships that have molded me into the woman I’m becoming. All the experiences of my life in Atlanta, in the south, all made me into who I am,” Josey explained.
