Nija isn’t holding back on What I Didn’t Say, the follow-up to her 2022 debut album, Don’t Say I Didn’t Warn You.

“This project came from moments where I didn’t have the words, or chose not to use them,” says Nija. “What I Didn’t Say is me finally saying everything — with more peace than pain. It represents growth for me. It’s about learning when to speak, when to walk away, and trusting that letting go can lead you somewhere better.”

What I Didn’t Say is nuanced and vulnerable. Across 10 tracks, Nija tells a personal story of love lost and gained, and the in-between abyss. Her pre-album standalone track, “Unruly,” indicated that she was ready to dive deeper into that transitional phase. She told Rated R&B in 2024, “It’s the soundtrack to leaving whatever hurt you behind you and feeling good about yourself.” She added, “My last project was about heartbreak and this upcoming one is about how it plays out when you’re done with that. We really outside now.”

Early singles from What I Didn’t Say, such as “32nd Floor” and “Heaven,” bask in the high side of love, where the intimacy feels divine. Meanwhile, the opening track, “Hurt,” laments the aftermath of it all crashing down with both at fault. “Is this revenge, or is it real? / I can’t take what I dish out,” Nija sings. The Blxst-assisted “I Just Called” is a confessional that addresses the lingering feelings that can’t seem to go away. “I just called to say / I miss you, babe,” Nija sings.

On “Back Outside,” Nija finally accepts that what is done is done and the only way is forward. The sultry “Things We Do” captures the sunrise of newfound love. She exclusively tells Rated R&B, “‘Things We Do’ is about being honest with your desires and living in the moment. It’s that feeling when the tension is real, and you decide to stop overthinking and just enjoy it.”

With What I Didn’t Say, Nija sheds her emotional baggage from past heartache, using each song as a stepping stone towards a love that she knows she deserves. Ending with “Mmhmm,” Nija is beyond words to describe the intensity of that romance; all she knows is this one is a keeper: “You was in the top two, now you only one.”
