Genre-bending singer and songwriter Nija is back with “Unruly,” her first taste of new music in two years. It was produced by IAmTash, Matt Kolb, and Trillboygeo.
Over a smooth, hard-hitting production, Nija brushes off past anguish and holds her head high with self-affirming lyrics.
“Starin’ in the mirror, I damn near got jealous / Face card don’t decline, A-1 credit / I been hurt, I been hurt / Topic of discussion, mm-hmm, like Reddit,” she sings.
Speaking on her new single, Nija exclusively tells Rated R&B, “I wrote ‘Unruly’ because I felt like the girlies needed another anthem to celebrate themselves. It’s about knowing who you are, knowing your worth and knowing the power you possess while looking good doing it.”
She continues, “It’s the soundtrack to leaving whatever hurt you behind you and feeling good about yourself, going out with your girls, treating yourself, and living your best life — but sexy drill so you can bop. My last project was about heartbreak and this upcoming one is about how it plays out when you’re done with that. We really outside now.”

“Unruly” follows Nija’s 2022 single “Love Like This,” also produced by IamTash and Jack Rochon. The heartwarming song, released that summer, marked the beginning of a new era following her debut EP, Don’t Say I Didn’t Warn You, which dropped Jan. 28, 2022.
The project, released via Capitol Records, was preceded by the singles “Ease My Mind (Come Over),” “Finesse,” and “On Call.”
Since then, Nija has departed from Capitol Records and embarked on her independent journey.
Even though she went two years without releasing solo music, the in-demand songwriter has kept herself active, penning songs for Beyoncé (“Cozy“), Usher (“Good Good“), Normani (“All Yours“), and Coco Jones (“Most Beautiful Design“), to name a few.
