Jazmine Sullivan recently collaborated with the Okay, Now Listen podcast, powered by Netflix’s Strong Black Lead, to unpack her Heaux Tales project with hosts Scottie Beam and Sylvia Obell.
The segment included a live performance of “Girl Like Me,” a duet from Sullivan’s recent release featuring H.E.R.
Approaching the Bongo ByTheWay-produced track as a solo effort, Sullivan, styled in a hazel windbreaker get-up, unleashed her supreme vocal power in front of an intimate audience with backing from a guitarist.
Bongo spoke to Rated R&B in an edition of Board + Pen about creating “Girl Like Me,” summing up its production as “the definition of less is more.”
“I didn’t even attempt to put drums on the song because it was so good. I didn’t want to overproduce. I didn’t want anything to take away from what they were saying,” he explained.
Sullivan joined forces with Leon Bridges this week for the Gold-Diggers Sound bonus track “Summer Rain.” She also teamed up with Curtis Harding for “Our Love” and Rick Ross for “Outlawz” with 21 Savage.
