Melanie Fiona is feeling resilient on her new single, “Mona Lisa Smile.”

Named after Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic Mona Lisa painting, “Mona Lisa Smile” is a powerful anthem for those who bear the weight of staying strong amid adversity. It speaks to the moment when we’re on the verge of succumbing to weariness — not out of weakness, but because of the emotional toll it takes to remain defiant.

“Perfect picture in a broken frame and / No one ever sees the broken pieces of the painting,” Fiona sings over rich instrumentation.

Sonically, the Andre Harris-produced ballad recalls Fiona’s signature vintage soul sound that fans of “It Kills Me” and “Wrong Side Of A Love Song” will appreciate.

Speaking on “Mona Lisa Smile,” Fiona explains, “This song is an homage to all the brave, broken, beautiful works of art—the women, the wives, the mothers—truly, anyone holding it together despite wanting to fall apart. The ‘Mona Lisa Smile’ is the armor we all wear to protect our pain.”

“Mona Lisa Smile” is Fiona’s third song since making her comeback in 2024 with “Say Yes” and “I Choose You.” All three songs will appear on her long-awaited project, Say Yes, which will release later this year.

Regarding Say Yes, Fiona told Rated R&B, “It’s a fun project. I don’t think it would feel heavy to people, no matter what the context is. Everything was created with a lot of joy. I think people are going to hear, I want to say, like a playful side of me.”

She added, “I want this project to be for everybody. I want it to feel affirmative. I want it to feel like a homegirl hug.”

The EP will mark Fiona’s first body of work since her 2012 sophomore album, The MF Life.
