Melanie Fiona’s signature single “It Kills Me” has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), selling more than one million equivalent units since its 2009 release.

With writing credit from the late Andrea Martin, “It Kills Me” is was the second single from Fiona’s debut album, The Bridge.

The Softones-sampled hit peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart, remaining in the top spot for two consecutive weeks. It spent a total of 29 weeks on the chart.

Additionally, it was the number-one track on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for nine weeks. As for the Billboard Hot 100, “It Kills Me” spent 20 weeks on the chart, peaking at No. 43.

Fiona landed a nomination for “It Kills Me” at the 52nd Grammy Awards (Best Female R&B Vocal Performance).

“It Kills Me” is Fiona’s second RIAA certification. “4AM,” lifted from her sophomore album The MF Life, was certified gold in 2013 with more than 500,000 units sold.

Speaking of The MF Life, which turns 10 in March, Fiona recently shared a video of her singing the album’s lead single, “Gone and Never Coming Back.” She dedicated the acapella rendition to Martin, who also co-wrote and co-produced the song.

“I’ve been listening [to] my own music recently (which I never do) just so I can hear her vocals layered in the background with mine,” Fiona captioned on Instagram. “She will live on forever in the music we created and I’m so eternally grateful to be a part of her incredible legacy.”

Fiona has been relatively quiet as it pertains to releasing music. In 2018, she spoke with Rated R&B about her forthcoming album at the time, Next Train. However, it was ultimately shelved.

In a 2019 Instagram post, Fiona shared an update on what she experienced in her life between 2017 and 2018.

“My confidence is shattered. Long time and newly established personal and professional support systems fall apart. My album gets shelved. I develop an autoimmune skin disorder from stress. 🧿 I start seeing a therapist,” she wrote.
