John Legend and Common are having a great year so far. Their emotional song “Glory,” from the Selma soundtrack, won an Oscar for Best Original Song at the 87th Annual Academy Awards.
The two received their prestigious award shortly after performing the song, which brought some people in the audience to tears, including David Oyelowo who played Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma.

“We wrote this song for a film that was based on events that were 50 years ago, but we say that Selma is now because the struggle for justice is right now,” said Legend. “We live in the most incarcerated country in the world. There are more black men under correctional control today than were under slavery in 1850. When people are marching with our song, we want to tell you, ‘We are with you. We see you. We love you. And march on.'”
“Glory” also was a Golden Globe last month for Best Song.
Congratulations John Legend and Common!
