Stars flocked to Washington, D.C. for the Urban One Honors on Sunday evening (Dec. 9). Hosted by comedian D.L. Hughley, the inaugural event celebrated the accomplishments of individuals who have made an impact on culture or society.
R&B veteran Brandy was honored with the Cathy Hughes Excellence Award, which was presented by her brother Ray J. “She is and will always be the first black Cinderella, the first black singer to be the face of Cover Girl and the vocal bible to millions of fans,” he said.
Seasoned producer Jermaine Dupri received the Living Legend Award, which was presented by his longtime collaborators Bryan-Michael Cox and Da Brat.
Emerging artist Jade Novah walked away with the Viral Sensation Award, while actor/singer Rotimi received the Generation Next Award.
There were also performances sprinkled in throughout the night by Elle Varner, K-Ci of Jodeci, Johnny Gill and Marvin Sapp, who was also honored.
“I am immensely proud of our inaugural Urban One Honors awards show,” expressed Urban One Chairperson, Cathy Hughes. “We exhibited and experienced black on black love and appreciation, something that is extremely critical during these times. We are already planning for next year and look forward to creating a rich tradition of celebrating the best and brightest of who we are.”
The award show was taped and is expected to premiere on TV One in 2019.
