Tamika Scott (of Xscape) is stepping out on her own. On her lax new single “Tonite,” the R&B veteran uses Nas’ “One Mic” instrumental and apes Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” melody to sing about treating herself to an evening out with her girlfriends.
“It’s the weekend and I’m in my zone / Tonight I’m not trying to be home alone / Just freshened up, hopped out the tub / Ladies free all night at the club / Smelling real good, slip my outfit on / Any little stress that I had is gone,” she boasts in a beautiful vocal tone.
“Tonite” is the first offering from Scott’s upcoming summer EP, The Movie. The project will be worked as her first solo release and her first musical endeavor since the legendary R&B group Xscape updated their stage name to Xscap3 last year.
As a trio — consisting of Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott — they released an EP titled Here for It. The EP spawned a top 20 R&B hit single “Memory Lane.”
