Is it hot or is Mereba causing a “Heatwave” with her new acoustic rendition of her humid journey to Black freedom?
Coming just in time for Juneteenth, the updated version of the 6LACK-assisted track ties together — in a simplified manner — the ideas about over-policing and criminal profiling against Black people in the dog days ahead.
6LACK lets his frustration rip over racism on his verse, rapping, “I fall flat like I’m trying out for track / ‘Cause they beat a n*gga blue just for lovin’ that he Black / My advice is run like Obama ‘fore they catch you like Osama / Better run like a nose ‘fore they catch you like a cold.”
The repurposed track first appeared on Mereba’s debut album, The Jungle Is the Only Way Out, which arrived last spring to critical acclaim.
Mereba recently lent her voice to Spillage Village’s 2020-inspired single “End of Daze.”
