A remix ain’t a remix unless Missy Elliott comes through. After proving she could deliver the goods on the solo tip, Toni Braxton calls on Missy Misdemeanor for the remix of her latest single “Do It.”
The updated version has a more contemporary feel than its predecessor, incorporating siren noises and a sassier overtone to the female power anthem.
Elliott runs to Braxton’s rescue of being sick and tired, spitting fire bars, “I’m the best you ever had like I told ya / Don’t run and hide when I roll up / You cheat on me you get no more love / You gon be sad when you see I had enough.”
Speaking on working with Braxton, Elliott said in a statement, “Toni’s team reached out to my manager and asked if I could produce a remix for her next single. They said, ‘Hey if Missy wants to rap on it we would love that too.’ So they sent me the record and my boy Hannon and I, sped the track up to a mid-tempo and re-arranged the music.”
She continued, “To be honest, I was scared to send it because anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a huge fan of Toni Braxton! I’ve worked with so many legends. I’ve even worked with Tamar. But I had never worked directly with Toni before. So I thought, what if she hears it and says ‘oh HELL NAH Missy done messed my record up.’ But thank God when she heard it, she loved it and hear we are! Now I can say I finally worked with the living legend — Ms. Toni Braxton.”
“Do It” is currently in the top 10 on the Billboard Adult R&B Songs chart, becoming her 18th overall in May.
The lovely track is the lead single to Braxton’s untitled forthcoming album. The follow-up to 2018’s Sex & Cigarettes will be released in August through Braxton’s new deal with Island Records.
