Since winning the coveted award in the category of Best R&B Album in 2013 for Black Radio, and receiving a nod a year later for the sequel, Robert Glasper has had critics and fans alike on their toes for the next album.
Now, after releasing multiple collaborative albums, a soundtrack (The Photograph), and a mixtape, the acclaimed musician has announced his plans for Black Radio 3. He shared the first proper single called “Better Than I Imagined” featuring H.E.R. and Meshell Ndegeocello.
Speaking on the track, Glasper says in a statement, “Black lives matter and so does black love; no one wants a life without love, but we have generations of people in our community who haven’t had the tools to actually be in healthy relationships.”
He adds, “It seems like people are finally ready to open their eyes to systemic racism in this country, and if we’re going to talk about it, we have to also talk about how it affects our relationships — how we communicate, how we see ourselves, how we treat each other. It’s not always good, even though maybe it could be.”
Glasper packages the new song with an artsy music video. Watch it below.
Today (August 28), Glasper is taking his profound talent to the March on Washington, which coincides with the 57th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
In June, Glasper teamed up with cultural songwriting and production hitmakers Terrace Martin, 9th Wonder and Kamasi Washington to form supergroup Dinner Party. They released an album under the same name in July.
