Jacob Banks is no “Stranger” to Rated R&B. Village, the baritone soulman’s 2018 album, landed a position on our year-end best R&B albums list the same year. Now, Banks wins our hearts again with his newest track.
On “Stranger,” co-produced by Sillkey, Banks explores the aftermath of a grueling post-breakup experience. His voice is weighted in its rich tone, as well as the sense of finality and reflection about coming through an overcast of misery that some don’t always escape. After stepping on the foreign soil of contentment after those once-permanent emotions have ceased from stirring, Banks can enjoy the “freedom like it’s wine.”
Bank visually communicates “Stranger” in a death-defying music video. He said in a post that he and his co-star Gia Ré almost risked their lives during the making of this video, which was co-directed by Anthony Williams. Watch it above.
“Stranger” is the first taste of original material from Banks since 2019’s “Every Age.” He released his stirring rendition of “Like You’ll Never See Me Again” by Alicia Keys this spring.
