R&B gents Kevin Ross, Jacob Latimore and Trevor Jackson have teamed up for a new empowering anthem titled “Real Black.”
The uplifting tune was written and produced by Ross, and is a celebration of Blackness. “What we got is given, they can’t steal that / I just want my ancestors to kick back / Be proud and be Black, for real,” Latimore sings.
“This song came together so organically. Started this song just days after George Floyd’s passing,” Ross said. “What I saw within the country and through social media was our culture showing a level of passion, conviction, and authenticity towards a cause that’s bigger than us all.”
He added, “It was one of the only times that I felt everyone put their clout and BS to the side to stand together. Very honored to have Trevor and Jacob alongside me on this record. Three perspectives for one cause. There’s no greater time to be young, gifted, and black.”
“Real Black” appears on EMPIRE’s compilation album Voices For Change, Vol. 1, which is out now. All of the streaming and merchandise sales from the project will be donated to the ACLU to support racial justice, voting rights and criminal law programs. The album features contributions from PJ Morton, Sammie, Lloyd, Rotimi and more.
In other music news, Ross recently released his project Audacity, Vol. 2, the follow-up to the first installment that was released in January. Latimore dropped his Leo Season EP in August in celebration of his birthday. Meanwhile, Jackson released his Rough Drafts, Pt. 2 project last June.
