Ella Mai hit a home run with her self-titled debut album in 2018. The R&B sensation achieved back-to-back number one success for her first two singles (“Boo’d Up” and “Trip”) and even took home a Grammy the following year. Now, after soaring to the peak of Adult R&B Airplay with Usher for “Don’t Waste My Time” earlier this year, Mai looks to continue her hot streak with “Not Another Love Song,” her first solo single of 2020.
The glossy hard-hitting track was co-written with Varren Wade, and produced by Boi-1da, Jahaan Sweet, and The Rascals. Mai finds herself in between a rock and a hard place as her stomach is filled with butterflies for a desired lover. While she doesn’t want to put too much pressure on the budding relationship, she leaves the ball in his court to make it official in hopes that what she heart is feeling doesn’t equate to yet another sad love song.
“Not Another Love Song” is the right single to welcome Mai back, and indeed a strong contender for both urban and urban contemporary radio audiences. It’s also a great lead single for her forthcoming sophomore album.
