It seems almost too good to be true. Giveon is back with his second project of 2020, and it’s called When It’s All Said and Done.
Like its predecessor Take Time, which secured a spot on Rated R&B’s best albums of 2020 so far list in July, the four-track EP recalls the same emotive potency. Giveon’s rich, resonant voice is heard in the most vulnerable state on the Snoh Aalegra-assisted duet “Last Time,” as well as on the somber “Stuck on You.” On the latter piano-based tune, the Long Beach, Calif. native can’t fathom to reminisce on his past girl in the company of his friends because they’re exhausted with him rehashing their doomed romance.
“Still Your Best” is battered in fluid layers of dark acoustic guitar playing, and Giveon’s heavy baritone. He is disgusted at the fact that a former lover has moved on with someone that he considers a downgrade. He strokes his ego by expressing to her that his feelings and emotions will never belong to her again.
“These songs are about situations that happened six to eight years ago, so it’s a form of therapy to finally get it off my chest after all this time,” Giveon told Elle’s Nerisha Penrose in a recent interview about his When It’s All Said and Done. “I want to be one of those artists who are openly honest and vulnerable. Being a savage person comes easy to some, but deep down I’m just not that type of dude. I’m out here mourning and heartbroken like the rest of us.”
