Amber Mark has a knack for song covers. In the spirit of giving this holiday season, the rising singer has shared her rendition of Harry Nilsson’s 1969 hit “I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City.” The track is lifted from the soundtrack to season one of Netflix’s drama series Grand Army.
On this Harlan Silverman and Demond “Pregnant Boy” Toney-produced cover, she finds a mutual ground to stick to the vocal stylings of the original, while employing a haunted sound that adds a soulful depth to her thrilling vocal performance. The producers also leave the twangy direction of the original behind and give Mark an enthralling backdrop to accentuate her vocal prowess.
“I Guess the Lord Must Be In New York City” is one of the many covers released from Mark this year. She previously shared a compelling remake of Eddie Kendricks’ “My People,” SisQó’s Grammy-nominated track “Thong Song,” and an electro-soul rendition of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box.”
Mark also treated fans to original music, including the empowering anthem “1894” and soulfully-serene “Waiting (Demo).”
