New Music Friday is in full swing, and Leela James wants a piece of the action. The soul singer has shared a brand new song titled “Complicated.”
It links James’ sandpaper voice to a traditional R&B production crafted by Rex Rideout, Ledisi’s frequent collaborator.
The song’s central theme is James’ yearning to make a stronger connection with an uncertain friend and go to the next level. It makes sense for the two to come together and make a happy home, but there is hesitation on his end. James’ assertive vocal performance here might have what it takes to convince him she’s the one.
“Complicated” is James’ first solo, R&B dedicated tune since 2018’s “This is Me.” She released an edgy, psychedelic-focused EP (Are You Ready) in collaboration with The Truth Band in 2019.
