Considering today is Earth Day, the timing couldn’t be better for PJ Morton to release his new song “Be Like Water” featuring Stevie Wonder and Nas.
This aquatic unload is the kind of tune that is starting to become Morton’s calling card. He is still committed to the innate inspiration and urging his church upbringing has offered.
On “Be Like Water,” co-written and co-produced by Morton and Nas, listeners are invited to cleanse themselves in a deep blue and rinse off the troubles that have them bound.
“I think by now you should know / Things won’t always go your way / Can’t change things you can’t control / So let those worries wash away,” Morton sings.
Wonder was a perfect addition here, closing out the calming flow of music with his signature harmonica.
Morton described “Be Like Water” as a familiar phrase. He shared in a statement, “Bruce Lee made it famous, of course, but it didn’t fully connect with me until we were all shut down and I had to pivot in my life like we all had to.
After I finished writing it I could only hear Nas’ voice on it. For him to actually get on it blew my mind. Then when Stevie Wonder agreed to be on it and to learn that Nas had always wanted to work with Stevie, it was beyond my wildest dreams!”
“Be Like Water” is the third song from Morton’s forthcoming album, Watch The Sun, out April 29. He previously shared “Please Don’t Walk Away” and “My Peace,” featuring JoJo and Mr. Talkbox.
Morton performed the last song mentioned at a recent taping of ABC’s Good Morning America.
Additional appearances on Morton’s Watch The Sun album include Jill Scott, El DeBarge, Alex Isley, Samoht, Wale, Chronixx, and many others.
“One of my main rules is to not think of guests while I’m creating,” Morton explained about his selecting his album collaborators.
“When you think of the guest first, it becomes about what would fit for them instead of just making the best song I can make. Every guest is there in a super-intentional way – not because of who they are, but because they fit on these songs.”
On April 29, the same day Watch The Sun premieres, Morton will perform in his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana, at the Jazz & Heritage Festival.
He’ll take a brief break before going back on the road for his massive headlining Watch The Sun Tour. The multi-date trek starts in late May and will carry him into the fall. Tickets are available now.
In 2020, Wonder released two new tracks: “Where Is Our Love Song” featuring Gary Clark Jr. and “Can’t Put It In The Hands of Fate” with Rapsody, Cordae, Chika, and Busta Rhymes.
Both songs were released under his new imprint, So What The Fuss Music, in partnership with Republic Records/Universal Music Group.
