On Tuesday night, Muni Long landed onstage at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter delivered a sensational performance of “Time Machine.”
Styled as a cyborg and rocking a short hair-do, Long and her extraterrestrial dancers thrilled audiences with a set that was out of this world.
“Time Machine” is lifted from Long’s debut album, Public Displays of Affection: The Album, released in September. The fan-favorite previously appeared on Long’s 2021 EP, Public Displays of Affection.

In an interview with Rated R&B, Long shared how she came up with the idea for “Time Machine.”
“It’s just a real song, man,” Long explained. “I think every person, regardless of gender, gender identity, or sexuality, have all gone through a moment with another person where we’re like, ‘Man, I wish I never met your ass’ (laughs). So that’s what this song is about – just expressing that frustration.”
Public Displays of Affection: The Album, which included the platinum single “Hrs and Hrs,” was featured on Rated R&B’s Best R&B Albums of 2022 list.
“It’s a relatively contemporary listen of openhearted ballads and radically honest anthems that dredge up wistful memories of throwback R&B,” wrote Rated R&B’s Antwane Folk. “Nobody could have predicted that a rebrand and a hit single would have made Long an overnight sensation. But never giving up on your dreams is the true victor here.”

Long received three nominations at next year’s Grammy Awards. She’s up for Best New Artist, Best R&B Performance (“Hrs and Hrs”), and Best R&B Song (“Hrs and Hrs”)
“I have this thing where my reaction is delayed and things don’t really hit me until a few moments after. A few moments could be weeks days maybe months depending on what has happened,” Long wrote in an Instagram caption.
“I’ve been working as a professional musician since I was 19 years old but I’ve known since I was five that this is what I wanted to do with my life. Isn’t it crazy how over 15 years of hard work, grinding, and tears can look so much like an overnight success? Very very grateful for this moment and no matter what happens after today I’m happy.”
