Coco Jones had a big night at the 2023 BET Awards on Sunday.
The rising R&B singer won Best New Artist, which was stacked with other budding acts such as Ambré, Doechii, FLO, GloRilla, Ice Spice and Lola Brooke.
Jones delivered an emotional acceptance for her first BET Award win. “Thank you so much to my culture who has stood beside me and we were raised together,” Jones said. “It’s been a really long, long journey. Thank you so much to my team. Thank you guys for taking the chance on me. I didn’t have anything going for me at that time.”
She continued, “I just wanna thank God so much for keeping me when I didn’t understand. And for all of my black girls, we do have to fight a little harder to get what we deserve but don’t stop fighting even when it doesn’t make sense and you’re not sure how you’re gonna get out of those circumstances. Keep pushing ’cause we are deserving of great things.”
Later in the night, Jones returned to the stage to perform her No. 1 single “ICU,” produced by Camper. The RIAA gold-certified song spent four weeks atop Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.
“ICU” is lifted from Jones’ debut EP, What I Didn’t Tell You, released in November 2022. The EP was reissued in January with a deluxe edition.
“This project will hopefully share my real-life experiences with my fans and show them that I’m just like them. Sometimes people see me as the characters I play, but these stories are my own script,” Jones explained.
