SZA has achieved her fourth No. 1 hit at urban radio as “Snooze” leads the pack this week.
She previously topped this format this year with “Kill Bill” and “Shirt,” both of which were lifted from her blockbuster album, SOS. SZA scored her first No. 1 in March 2022 with “I Hate U,” released in December 2021. The song also appears on SOS.
Elsewhere, “Snooze” moves to No. 2 on rhythmic radio and No. 16 on Mainstream Top 40 radio this week.
In a December 2022 interview with Rated R&B, Grammy-winning songwriter Leon Thomas shared how he got involved with “Snooze.”
“Me and my production partner Khris [Riddick-Tynes] were super nervous. SZA popped through, and she was so nice. I had met her before, but this was a great reintroduction to her new world of music,” Thomas stated to Rated R&B.
“I’m glad that I was able to collaborate with such strong creators. We also worked with this kid name BLK out of Scotland. He sent some parts in. The whole thing came together really fast. She wrote [“Snooze”] in an hour. We weren’t sure if she was going to use it, so it’s a super blessing.”
This isn’t SZA’s only No. 1 on radio this week. Her featured appearance on Lizzo’s “Special (Remix)” puts her at No. 1 on R&B radio, marking her second chart-topper on this format. She led with “Love Galore” featuring Travis Scott back in 2018.
SZA has had a productive 2023, topping multiple Billboard charts for the first time and repeating positions for new records. Her sophomore, SOS, album and its smash singles are to thank.
Released on Dec. 10, 2022, SOS debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It held that position for ten non-consecutive weeks.
The album went platinum before it moved another one million copies to achieve double platinum status.
Around then, SOS went 2x multi-platinum, and “Snooze” went platinum. Other singles from the record-breaking album also got upgraded certifications, such as “Kill Bill” at 3x multi-platinum and “Shirt” at platinum.
SZA won multiple awards at the 2023 BET Awards, which were held Sunday night (June 25). She won Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and SOS tied with Beyoncé’s Renaissance for Album of the Year.
Last week, SZA wrapped the European leg of her extended SOS Tour. She will resume the trek in North America this fall. It begins on Sept. 20 at Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, before she concludes on Oct. 29 at Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Tickets are available at szasos.com.
SZA is set to headline the Made In America Festival before the second SOS leg. The festival will take place over two days on Sept. 2 and Sept. 3, at Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lizzo will also be headlining the event.
