LOONY is back. The rising singer and songwriter has returned with “Old Friends,” her first musical release of 2023.
She wrote the soulful track herself and had Akeel Henry, Dan Farber, and Aaron Paris produce it.
In “Old Friends,” LOONY reflects on a past lover who seems to be ignoring her attempts to reconnect, despite her persistent efforts to communicate.
Discussing her new single, LOONY says, “Sometimes, when it’s all over, you never talk to that person again. Other times, time passes, and you find yourself absent-mindedly smiling thinking of them or even reaching out to see how life’s treating them. But it’s not like it was before – it’s platonic now. The intimacy from what was once romance remains, it just looks a little different. You’re able to just look at that person for who they are, for you know them quite well, and they know you.”
She continues, “You roll your eyes at them just the same but all the hurt is gone. Or most of it, at least. There’s something really sweet and singular to me about those moments, about those relationships. When relationships can often go so ugly, it’s a privilege when it ends to gain an old friend.”
“Old Friends” arrives nearly a year after “First Thing Smokin’,” released in September 2022. It is still being determined if either track will appear on an upcoming project.
LOONY has yet to release a collection of songs since 2021’s soft thing. The eight-track set included the singles “either side” and “raw.”
Of her last project, LOONY previously stated, “I found myself re-evaluating what’s important to me. Being isolated from people makes you think more about your relationships. It’s been a hard and very strange year and in a lot of ways and I’ve been forced to be more vulnerable than I’d ever been. soft thing is symbolic of that.”
