Jorja Smith stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last Thursday to perform material from her sophomore album, falling or flying.
Dressed in a silver tall jersey by Telfar, the British singer opened her two-song set with the emotive title track. She picked up the pace in the second half with the hip-shaking groove “Little Things.”
As noted above, “Little Things” and “Falling or flying” are lifted from Smith’s latest album, which dropped Sept. 29 via FAMM.
Regarding the former song, Smith noted, “The song is pretty self-explanatory, I had a lil concoction – rum, ting and a magnum. When we started creating this song I was just imagining hearing this walking into a party and seeing someone I’d had my eye on. It’s fun!”
She explained the title track, “[It] came to mind ‘cause I always wanted to shoot a video in space. ‘Falling Or flying’ just made me think of that. I wanted to go up into space with someone I love and cherish, but they didn’t want to come with me.”
As for falling or flying itself, Smith shared, “This album is like my brain. There’s always so much going on but each song is definitely a standstill moment. It touches on breakups, relationships with my friends, relationships with old friends, relationships with myself. It’s definitely about a lot of relationships, but every song I write I can sing it to myself.”
Falling or flying is the follow-up to Smith’s debut album, Lost & Found, released in 2018.
Smith has a few sold-out shows happening in the U.K. next month. On Nov. 7, she will play at O2 Academy Birmingham, then Albert Hall in Manchester on Nov. 9. She will conclude Nov. 10 at Troxy in London.
