Fantasia is among the 81st Golden Globes nominees, which were revealed today (Dec. 11).
She is up for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for playing Celie in the upcoming musical adaptation of The Color Purple.
It’s Fantasia’s first Golden Globes nomination of her career.

Additionally, Danielle Brooks has been nominated for Best Supporting Female Actor in any Motion Picture for her role as Sofia in The Color Purple.
The 2024 Golden Globes will broadcast live on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET from the Beverly Hilton, in Beverly Hills, California.
The 81st edition of the ceremony will be available on CBS or to stream on Paramount+ either live or on-demand.
Circling back to The Color Purple, the anticipated musical reimagination of Alice Walker’s 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and the 2005 stage production by Marsha Norman is directed by Blitz Bazawule. It will be released on Dec. 25 in the U.S. and on Jan. 18, 2024, globally.
As stated above, the upcoming film stars Fantasia as Celie and Danielle Brooks as Sofia.
Other notables in the film include Taraji P. Henson (as Shug Avery), Colman Domingo (as Mister), Corey Hawkins (as Harpo), Halle Bailey (as young Nettie), Ciara (as adult Nettie), and H.E.R. (as Squeak), among others.
According to marketing materials, The Color Purple is “a story of love and resilience” as well as “a decades-spanning tale of one woman’s journey to independence.”
It continues, “Celie faces many hardships in her life, but ultimately finds extraordinary strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.”

On Dec. 15, The Color Purple (Music From and Inspired By) will be released. The star-studded soundtrack will feature both original and songs inspired by the film and tracks performed in the musical.
Two tracks have been released, including “Lifeline” by Alicia Keys and “Risk It All” by Usher and H.E.R. The latter song, which H.E.R. co-wrote and co-produced, is already gaining traction on urban and R&B radio. Meanwhile, Keys’ “Lifeline” is climbing up Hot AC radio. It jumped from No. 50 to No. 37 this week.
Circling back to the soundtrack, a new song by Fantasia, written and produced by The-Dream, will play in the movie’s end credits.
Additional soundtrack guests include Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Missy Elliott, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Halle Bailey, Coco Jones, Megan Thee Stallion, Taraji P. Henson, Jorja Smith, Mary Mary and more.
The Color Purple (Music From and Inspired By) is executive produced by the legendary Quincy Jones, Scott Sanders, and Larry Jackson, founder/CEO of gamma. It will be released via Warner Bros. Pictures, WaterTower Music and gamma.
