SiR has landed a new award from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
His 2019 hit “John Redcorn” has achieved gold certification, surpassing 500,000 equivalent units sold. It’s the second song from the Top Dawg Entertainment signee’s third album, Chasing Summer, to earn an RIAA award and marks his third RIAA honor overall.
“Hairdown,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, SiR’s fellow TDE labelmate, was certified gold in the summer of 2020. This achievement marked the Grammy-nominated singer’s first certification.
Three years later, in August 2023, SiR’s song “D’Evils” was also declared gold. That track is from his debut album, November, which was released in 2018.
Back to “John Redcorn.” In an interview with DJBooth, SiR mentions lyrics embedded in the fan-favorite, which was produced by Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman and Kal Banx, “fits a lot of situations I’ve been in where I put my heart out there, and it wasn’t reciprocated.”
He continued, “In that song, that song is about John Redcorn. He pleads his case to his sweetheart as much as possible, but she still doesn’t care. She’s with her husband.”
After the release of his album, Chasing Summer, in 2019, SiR shared the official video for “John Redcorn,” paying homage to the iconic King of the Hill character of the same name. Directed by Daniel Russell and Dominic Polcino, the animated video has garnered 22 million views on YouTube.
On Spotify, “John Redcorn” is one of SiR’s most popular tracks, boasting 104.5 million streams to date.
In March 2024, SiR triumphantly returned with his fourth album, Heavy. Rated R&B’s Keithan Samuels described the album as a “culmination of SiR’s trials and tribulations over recent years, delving into circumstances that have burdened him.”
When asked how it felt to channel his burdens into music, SiR expressed his insights to Rated R&B: “It’s very gratifying, but I’m still going through it as we speak. I’ll have a better answer for you after the tour — after I sing these songs in every city and have a chance to really let go because I’m still holding on [to] a lot. I’m working through things as they come.”
Heavy spun off four singles, including the Adult R&B chart entries, “Nothing Even Matters” (No. 9) and “Poetry in Motion” featuring Anderson .Paak (No. 10). Both songs represent his first pair of top 10 hits on this chart, powered by Billboard.
SiR toured with his album Heavy during the national Life Is Good Tour.
Beyond his solo efforts, SiR co-wrote Melanie Fiona‘s highly anticipated return single, “Say Yes,” released today (Oct. 25). He also contributed backing vocals to this heartfelt track, produced by Andre Harris, with Chris Dave on drums, Thundercat on bass, and Charlie Bereal on guitar.
