November is National Gratitude Month, so it’s only fitting that Mary J. Blige’s new album, Gratitude, arrives now.
The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul’s 15th album is her second release under her Mary Jane Productions imprint in partnership with 300 Entertainment.
Gratitude opens with the chart-topping lead single, “Breathing,” featuring Fabolous. On the light and breezy tune, Blige coos about being happily in love, which sets the tone for what’s to come. Much of the album explores the bright side of love.
The Darkchild-produced “Need You More,” which samples En Vogue’s “Hold On,” finds Blige constantly yearning for her partner. “Love when you love me baby / when you touch me baby,” she sings over a funky bassline.
Delicate tunes like the acoustic-driven “Nobody But You” and the piano-laden “Here I Am” highlight the devotion and vulnerability that comes with love. Just because Blige is madly in love doesn’t mean she will tolerate any mistreatment. “Don’t F—k Up” sends a clear warning: “I’m in love but don’t f—k up.”
While Blige doesn’t spend too much time dwelling on the downside of love, she doesn’t completely ignore it. On “Can’t Wait For You,” she grows tired of an inconsistent love interest, leaving her no choice but to move on to the next.
When Blige isn’t singing about love, she’s dropping gems about life. The album’s second single, “You Ain’t The Only One” and the Kaytranada-produced “Beautiful People” are filled with affirming messages to soothe any soul. “We’re so beautiful, yes we are,” she sings in the latter dancefloor anthem.

Blige first announced her new album title on the season three premiere of the daytime talk show Sherri. When asked about the significance of the album title, Blige explained, “It’s called Gratitude because that’s where I am. I mean, look at my life right now. I’m in a constant state of gratitude.”
Blige continued, “I feel good. I have jobs and opportunities. I’m healthy. My family’s healthy. I have people around that care for me and love me. And I have amazing fans. I’m so grateful to my fans for all the years of love that they’ve given me and support.”
Gratitude is the follow-up to Blige’s 2022 album, Good Morning Gorgeous. The project, which spawned six nominations at the 65th Grammy Awards, including for Album of the Year, featured the No. 1 hit “Good Morning Gorgeous.” The self-affirming track was produced by D’Mile and H.E.R., with writing support from Lucky Daye, Tiara Thomas, and Blige herself.
In late January, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer will embark on her For My Fans Tour with special guests Ne-Yo and Mario. The 27-city tour begins in Greensboro, North Carolina, and will make stops in Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., New York, and more, before concluding April 14 in Boston.
