Two years ago, R&B-pop group FLO emerged on the scene with “Cardboard Box,” their debut single that quickly went viral on the app formerly known as Twitter. Despite the song’s success, they didn’t rush to put out an album. Instead, they continued developing as a group, refining their sound through a pair of EPs (The Lead, 3 of Us), a couple of standalone tracks, and collaborations with artists such as Missy Elliott, Stormzy and Kehlani.
Now, Jorja, Renée, and Stella are more than ready for the world with their debut album, Access All Areas, available now on Island Records.
“We’ve poured our hearts into this album and are immensely proud of the quality, sound, lyricism and storytelling we’ve created,” says FLO. “We’re so grateful to all of the collaborators on the album and know the heights it’s going to take us to! We hope everyone loves it as much as we do!”
The 16-track album was preceded by the singles “Walk Like This,” “Check,” “Caught Up,” “Bending My Rules,” and “AAA.” They keep features to a minimum, only calling on British actress/singer Cynthia Erivo and rising rap sensation GloRilla.
Access All Areas balances bass-heavy empowerment bangers (“In My Bag” featuring GloRilla, “How Does It Feel,” and “Walk Like This”), candlelit bedroom jams (“Soft,” “On & On,” and “AAA”) and breakup anthems (“IWH2BMX,” “Get It Till I’m Gone” and “Shoulda Woulda Coulda”).
Sonically, the album contains a healthy mix of R&B and pop elements that recall the late 1990s and early 2000s. “Shoulda Woulda Coulda” borrows Timbaland’s signature stuttering kick-drums, famously heard in songs like Aaliyah’s “One in a Million.” “Walk Like This” sounds like it could strut easily on 3LW’s self-titled album, while “Nocturnal” is somewhat reminiscent of TLC’s Fanmail era.
The rock-driven closer, “I’m Just A Girl,” sounds nothing like the rest of the album, which could signal their plans to expand their sonic palette in the future. Though they recognize “this song ain’t for everybody,” it takes a sheer level of confidence to conclude their first album on an experimental note.
Access All Areas arrives with an official music video for “In My Bag,” directed by Troy Roscoe and choreographed by Sean Bankhead, which is easily one of their best visuals to date.
“‘In My Bag’ is such a special song to us as we’re speaking life and greatness into us! It’s a manifestation… singing it live for our fans has been incredible because everyone in the room feels empowered and seen! We’ve been in our bag… and now everyone is too!” says FLO.
They continue, “GLO is such a deserving, incredibly talented and sweet artist who we really admire. When she said she’d love to do a verse on ‘In My Bag’ we were so happy because we knew she would kill it! We’ve loved working with her and are looking forward to everyone watching the video we shot together in Atlanta.”
FLO will support their debut album on their headlining Access All Areas Tour. The 10-city U.K./Europe leg begins March 2, 2025, at Amager Bio in Copenhagen, Denmark.
