R&B newcomer Journey Montana has released her debut album, Lucky Girl Syndrome, via 10K Projects.
The 10-track set, which clocks in at 28 minutes, is executive produced by Grammy-winning producer Camper (Brandy, H.E.R., Coco Jones).
On Lucky Girl Syndrome, Montana’s airy vocals float over Camper’s lush production as she reflects on past woes (“Journey”), suffers from heartache (“Vertigo”) and finds a love that’s promising (“You”). Songs like the title track and “Best One” see Montana exuding uninhibited confidence.
The closing track and current single, “Always Knew” featuring Maleigh Zan, is a pulsating bop primed for the dance floor. Here, Montana sings about rekindling an old flame after having the necessary space and time.
“We been off for a minute, now we on / Had to come back and get you on my arm / Now our exes can’t get us on the phone / I always knew it would be you,” she sings.
Montana says Lucky Girl Syndrome is “a labor of self-love and self-empowerment.” She further notes, “During the making of this project, I was inspired by the power of my words. Speaking love and light into myself is so important to me at this time in my life because if you don’t pour into yourself and believe in yourself, why would anyone else?”
She concludes, “Lucky Girl Syndrome is a collection of real stories of womanhood and feelings that I hope everyone can understand and enjoy.”
Montana launched her debut era in June 2024 with her autobiographical single “Journey.” She explained, “In this song, I’m speaking about my grandparents for the first time in my music. My personal struggles, my daddy issues, and other insecurities… I’m ready to lay it all on the line and share my truth.”
Later that summer, she followed up with the heartwarming ballad “You,” which was later reissued with a remix featuring Eli Derby. “Simply put, ‘You’ is a love song. The song embodies the fire you feel in your chest when you love every part of someone,” Montana explained.
In January of this year, she returned with the confident anthem “Best One,” noting it “comes from a place of acknowledging abundance, self-love, and appreciation for being the best choice in any situation.”
Lucky Girl Syndrome is the follow-up to Montana’s 2023 EP, Stargirl.
