In honor of what would be Nipsey Hussle’s 36th birthday, BJ The Chicago Kid paid tribute to the late rapper/philanthropist by reimagining his song “Double Up.” The original take appeared on Hussle’s Grammy-nominated album Victory Lap, and it featured Belly and Dom Kennedy.
“I wanted to creatively honor my friend who not just uplifted so many with his music, but was an incredible man who meant the world to the industry as a whole,” said BJ The Chicago Kid. “This is my way of working to continue his legacy through music.”
Back in July, BJ released 4 AM, his first music collection since parting ways with Motown Records. His last album, 1123, dropped in 2019 under his former label and earned him a top ten spot on the Rated R&B’s 30 best R&B albums list later that year.
Running it back to this year, BJ has crafted a song named after the Showtime hit series The Chi. He also teamed up with a few R&B gents to salute Sam Cooke and contributed to the Judas and The Black Messiah soundtrack.
