Last August, acclaimed producer Chucky Thompson teased fans that he and Mary J. Blige reunited for the closing credits score of her new horror thriller Body Cam. Today, the history-making Oscar nominee has officially released “Can’t Be Life” on streaming platforms everywhere.
The emotional score was co-written by Thompson, Denise Rich, Stacy Barthe, Aaron Philips and Jimmy Cozier, alongside Blige. The song’s edgy bassline and steady arrangement does justice to the Queen’s emotive delivery about wanting to experience more than pain on earth.
“I’ve been torn down like a worn-down crumbling building / But I’m up now, well I’m up now and I’m still living / I was chained to the pain and I couldn’t feel nothing / I was waiting on somebody to come fill me with something, yeah,” Blige sings on the second verse.
“Can’t Be Life” is sure to please Blige’s faithful fans who respect her soul-stirring performances. The new song follows her pair of 2019 singles: the heart-warming anthem “Know” and the Nas-assisted banger “Thriving.”
Body Cam is available now.
