Singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez is keeping out “Intruders” by any means necessary in the latest animated visual lifted from her debut album.
Directed by Reyez and Solis Animation Inc., the video sees the “Love In The Dark” singer idolizing a human island, similar to that in the Walt Disney Picture Moana.
Reyez’s take, however, focuses on her need to protect her lover at all costs, alluding to colonialism as a form of racism inspiring the video’s concept. “Colonialism is in the mitochondria of racism. INTRUDERS,” the singer posted to her Instagram following the video’s release.
The video eventually sees the giant landmass stripped of its resources and abandoned by its intruders as Reyez mourns the loss and the video ends.
“Intruders” is the latest in a series of conceptual videos by the Toronto-born songstress including “Same Side” and a live rendition of her hit song “Coffin.”
The Grammy-nominated artist released her debut LP Before Love Came To Kill Us back in March to critical acclaim. The project catapulted to the top 10 of the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart.
“Imported,” Reyez’s duet with fellow R&B star 6LACK, went platinum at the beginning of June.
