Five months after dropping Oxnard, Anderson .Paak returns with his brand new album titled Ventura.
For his latest project, the California native decided to take a more soulful approach, compared to his hip-hop heavy Oxnard.
The 11-track LP is loaded with features from R&B acts including Smokey Robinson, Brandy, Jazmine Sullivan, Lalah Hathaway and Sonyae Elise. It also includes appearances from OutKast’s André 3000 and late rapper Nate Dogg.
Ventura was created at the same time as Oxnard. Originally, both projects were going to drop simultaneously. However, Oxnard ended up coming out first.
In an interview with Vibe, .Paak came up with an interesting analogy to compare the two works. “It’s like one album (Oxnard) you could listen to if you’re going to the city, and the other one (Ventura) you can listen to on your way back,” he said.
He continued, “[Oxnard and Ventura] are both very ambitious albums…I love being able to put them in different contexts. I was able to do that with this album probably the most and at the same time, kind of an ode to Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (OutKast, 2003) and albums that really molded me, Life After Death (Notorious B.I.G, 1997) and the era I come up in.”
Last month, .Paak wrapped up his Andy’s Beach Club 2019 Tour. On May 17, he will kick off his Best Teef in the Game Tour in Nashville, Tennessee with special guest Thundercat. Earl Sweatshirt, Noname, Mac DeMarco and Jessie Reyez will join .Paak and Thundercat on select dates. The tour will conclude on June 27 at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Fransico, California.
In the meantime, .Paak is gearing up to perform at Coachella this weekend.
