Mary J. Blige continues to be a ‘thriving’ force in the film/television industry. The Oscar-nominated singer/actress has signed an exclusive first-look television deal with Lionsgate.
As part of the deal, Blige will develop and produce television via her new company Blue Butterfly productions. Blige will also have the opportunity to create content across Lionsgate’s many business platforms.
“I couldn’t be more excited to be working with Lionsgate. They are incredible collaborators and have been natural partners from when we first started talking. I can’t wait to bring all of our projects to life,” Blige said in a press statement.
Lionsgate Television Group Chairman Kevin Beggs added, “Mary is a very talented artist, fearless visionary and an incredible human being. We’re delighted to be working with someone with such a powerful and impactful creative voice. Every art she touches blossoms and we’re humbled she’s chosen us as her home. We look forward to all the exciting new content Mary and her Blue Butterfly banner will bring to our television slate and Lionsgate 360 orbit.”
Last year, Blige made Oscar history as the first person to ever be nominated for a performance and an original song for the same film (Mudbound) in the same year.
Blige currently stars in Netflix’s original series The Umbrella Academy. She is also set to star in the upcoming films Body Cam and The Violent Heart.
In music news, Blige will headline the 25th annual Essence Festival in New Orleans next week. She will also launch her joint tour with Nas this summer. That’s not all. Blige is also working on three projects for fans to enjoy. Although there aren’t many details available about the mysterious projects, we did compile a list of everything we know about them — plus some predictions.
