JoJo is keeping the new music coming.
Two weeks after dropping “Joanna,” the veteran singer returns with a new song called “Sabotage” featuring rising rapper Chika.
Behind a strong-bass backdrop, JoJo finds her mind clouded with old emotions about an ex-lover who she felt was left in the rear view for good reasons.
If you pay attention closely to JoJo’s vocal phrasing on the verses, it almost sounds like she’s paying homage to Total’s “What About Us” off the Soul Food soundtrack.
“Sabotage” is the official lead single off her untitled follow-up to 2016’s Mad Love. JoJo has been secretly working on the new album with the likes of Bryan Michael-Cox, Jermaine Durpi, and Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman.
JoJo revealed in a 2018 interview that she wants to compose new music in a way that she can be “completely transparent to where it speaks particularly to young women.”
She continued, “I want it to be hard. I want beats to be hard and I want the content to be real. I have nothing to hide and I just want to be as raw as possible.”
As of late, JoJo has been a hot commodity as a duet partner. Along with her R&B smash “Say So” with PJ Morton, she is featured on Tank’s new album Elevation and teamed with Jacob Collier for “It Don’t Matter.”
