The freshman R&B class of 2020 has a star student, and his name is Luh Kel. Acing every assignment with platinum (“Wrong”) and gold (“Pull Up,” “Brb”) success and maintaining his good grades with era-building songs like “All in You” and “Real,” the St. Louis native shows even greater potential on his new project L.O.V.E.
At a time when most of the emerging stars are tapping into different moods and experiences of love, Kel, across 14 tracks in 34 minutes, sees the value in riding that wave, too. But while this record nestles comfortably within the current R&B landscape, Kel’s melodic voice and sensitive songwriting points set him apart from the rest.
Like last year’s Mixed Emotions, Kel approaches L.O.V.E. with the confidence of a singer-songwriter that knows exactly what will appeal to their audience. Through the collection of tender street love songs, Kel touches on the subjects of trust and dependability on cuts such as “Y.O.U.” and “Promise.”
Even when he struggles to be vulnerable on songs like “How to Love,” Kel reels it back in and brings the vibes out on the project highlights “Ecstasy” and “Perfect Time.”
L.O.V.E. includes guest appearances from Queen Naija (“Want You”) and Lil Tjay (“Wrong (Remix)”).
