Solange, and her pro-Black agenda, is made for the film industry. With a leading aesthetic for Black musical expression, the Grammy winner has been tapped by Beats by Dr. Dre to score their new campaign ad, “You Love Me.”
The score has an analogy to the olive-oiled textured instrumentals from her When I Get Home album that placed in the top 10 of Rated R&B’s 30 best R&B albums of 2019. It encompasses fuzzy guitars, liquid atmospheres, and warm horns that meld with the direct message of the world’s likeness of Black culture, but not necessarily the visionary behind it.
The short film for the “You Love Me” ad was directed by Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim, Master of None) and narrated by Tobe Nwigwe. It stars Naomi Osaka, Lil Baby, Bubba Wallace, and Janaya Khan, who in the words of the statement, “have seen the world actively love their art or their athletic achievements, while also seeing the world continually oppress the Black community at large.”
The ad is intended to inspire Black youth by “highlighting the everyday beauty and rich diversity of their culture.”
