Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Jae Stephens is at her breaking point and is ready to get even with her ex on her new single “What You Need” featuring THEY.
A brooding drum machine tags the menacing record and cold and stylish backing vocals from the duo’s vocalist, Drew Love. Lyrically, Stephens is in no condition to love her abusive partner anymore and is tired of wearing the shameful title of a jilted woman.
Drew recounts doing dirt during the relationship. Still, in part, he puts the blame back on his ex, singing, “Now put the bullshit to the side / Not the only one that went and crossed the line.”
“What You Need” follows Stephens’ previous collaboration with VanJess called “Already On It.” Both songs have yet to be tied to a future project.
THEY., whose last album The Amanda Tape was released last fall, spoke to Rated R&B about evolving their sound. “I think that with this project, we want to kind of challenge the current model of what R&B is,” said Jones to Rated R&B’s Danielle Brissett. “I feel like right now, there’s a lot of really dope R&B artists but sonically, it can all kind of start to run together a little bit to where it’s kind of a vibe-y trap-y [sound].”
