PJ Morton isn’t the only prolific musician taking part in an artist residency this year. Devonté Hynes, whose alias is Blood Orange, has signed on for the Spring 2021 Artist-in-Residence program at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.
Over the course of the residency, which begins on February 22, the influential visionary will offer students the space to have one-on-one spring semester mentoring sessions, as well as opportunities to attend and engage in workshops and talks about his catalog through track-by-track breakdowns.
“I’m excited to meet students, witness their creative process, and see how I can be of assistance to them. It’s going to be as much of a learning experience for me as it is for them and I’m really looking forward to it.,” said Hynes in a press statement.
Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music Chair Jason King added, “Dev Hynes is one of the great polymaths in contemporary recorded music. He’s not only a gifted musician—he’s a performer, producer, songwriter, film composer and visual innovator, among his many talents. Given our mission to train creative music entrepreneurs who are well-rounded and holistic in their approach to the industry, there’s nobody more suited to the task of mentoring students to embrace the full range of their artistic talents.”
On the residency launch day, Hynes will field questions from King, as well as virtual viewers, regarding his career highlights, artistry, and music-making philosophies. The free, public event starts at 9 p.m. ET. Registration for the online launch event is now open on Eventbrite.
In 2019, Hynes issued a classical album (Fields) and released a mixtape (Angel’s Pulse) under his moniker Blood Orange. The year prior, Negro Swan, made Rated R&B’s top 25 R&B albums of 2018.
