Tank, also known as the R&B General, is back. The singer/songwriter/producer has released his new single titled “Can’t Let It Show” — and it’s a must-listen.
The poignant tune, written and produced by Tank himself, finds the R&B veteran in a vulnerable space as he reflects on some mistakes he made in a relationship.
“I should’ve been everything I promised / I should’ve not had to learn it from this / You shoulda been first,” he passionately sings in his falsetto voice.
“Can’t Let It Show” samples Kate Bush’s 1989 classic “This Woman’s Work,” which Maxwell later covered in 2001. Tank effectively incorporates the sample into the song, while adding his own touch. While some artists and producers have been criticized for lazy samples for the sake of nostalgia, Tank shows how to do it the right way.
In an interview with Rated R&B, Tank shared his thoughts on sampling. “I love artists [sampling] for the simple fact that it keeps our foundation alive. We keep going back and dipping in the well of our foundation to make current moments,” he said.
“Can’t Let It Show” is the first single from Tank’s new album that will arrive this summer. There aren’t many details available about the album at this time. However, according to a press release, it is “loaded with his signature romantic appeal.”
The album will follow Tank’s 2019 LP, Elevation. In 2020, he released two EPs to keep his fans engaged during quarantine: While You Wait and Worth The Wait.
Music isn’t Tank’s only focus this year. He will star opposite Keri Hilson in the made-for-television film Lust: A Deadly Sins Saga. It will premiere on Saturday, April 17 at 8 p.m. ET on Lifetime.
