We are just days away from the 2021 American Music Awards. The Weeknd is headed to this year’s ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with his mind on sweeping in all six of his leading categories, including Artist of the Year and Favorite Male R&B and Pop Artist.
Other top nominees include Givēon, H.E.R, Jazmine Sullivan, Silk Sonic, and Chris Brown, to name a few.
Hosted by Cardi B, the 2021 American Music Awards airs live on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m. EST. Until the award event happens, dive into our list of 10 facts about the 2021 AMAs nominees.
Jazmine Sullivan
Jazmine Sullivan received her first AMAs nominations this year, including Favorite Female R&B Artist, Favorite R&B Song (“Pick Up Your Feelings”), and Favorite R&B Album for Heaux Tales.
Usher
Usher is back in the Favorite Male R&B Artist race after a nine-year absence. He won back in 2012 as well as in 2010 and 2004.
H.E.R.
H.E.R. is vying for her first of three AMAs. She is up for Favorite Female R&B Artist, Favorite R&B Song (“Damage”), and Favorite R&B Album for Back of My Mind.
Tank
After two decades in the R&B game, Tank commands the attention of the AMAs, with his career-first nomination (Favorite Male R&B Artist).
Givēon
Up for AMAs for the first time, the multi-nominee freshman is the only male artist in the category of Favorite R&B Album this year for his gold-selling project, When It’s All Said And Done… Take Time.
SZA
SZA is part of the AMA history this year. Her “Kiss Me More” collaboration with Doja Cat is the first all-female pairing nominated for Favorite Pop Song. It also is SZA’s first entry in this field.
Chris Brown
This year, Chris Brown, nominated for three awards, is in his inaugural running for Collaboration of the Year. It’s for his Young Thug-starred “Go Crazy,” which topped the urban radio and Billboard charts in 2020.
The Weeknd
The Weeknd is once again nominated for Artist of the Year. His initial nod was last year for his successful After Hours era.
Jhené Aiko
Jhené Aiko’s nomination for Favorite Female R&B Artist is her third overall. She scored her first in 2014 and her second in 2020.
Silk Sonic
Silk Sonic’s breakthrough single “Leave The Door Open” is nominated for Favorite Music Video. It makes them the very first duo or group nominated in this category.
