Oscar-nominated singer, songwriter and producer Dixson is back with the follow-up to last year’s DARLING. His new collection of songs, 004DAISY, is available everywhere. It’s his second offering released via Roc Nation.
Prior to 004DAISY‘s release, Dixson shared four songs, including the Sevyn Streeter-assisted “Cherry Sorbet.”
Released on May 6, the tasty duet served as the EP’s lead single. It’s his most recent appearance on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart, reaching No. 17 in its 16th week (Sept. 17). He released a music video for their collaboration that promoted Black intelligence. Weird Life directed it.
Shortly after the video release, Dixson announced 004DAISY and issued the EP’s first three songs, one of which was “Heat,” featuring Tinashe. As Rated R&B pointed out, the ridiculously replayable track mixes Earth, Wind & Fire’s brass genius and Tinashe’s and Dixson’s vocal smoothness.
Also featured on 004DAISY are Vic Mensa, Michael Armstead and Stolen Nova. The first two acts add star power to “Are You Really There?” It’s a full-on dance and R&B plea for transparency that flirts with high-pitched choral music in the background. Whereas the latter band ropes in the distinct rock element for Dixson to float on the electric “Butterfly.”
Nestled inside the middle section is “La Nocturne,” a clinky groove where he permits his lady to be on her worst behavior. Then, there’s the EP’s finale, “Sweeter.” It could be the tender outing to place Dixson on stage at the next CMT Music Awards.
All in all, 004DAISY is a satisfying successor to DARLING. It has fluidity and cross-genre appeal, making it one of the most refreshing listens of 2022.
In recent interview with Rated R&B, he did confirm that what he dropped after his 2021 release would be “the lead-up and interlude to this bigger character.”
Dixson said in a statement, “I’m not trying to be R&B’s personal Jesus. I’m not as worried about R&B as the rappers and white boys are. 004DAISY is the beta, my own version of freedom. If you let them, they will box you in. This is me boxing back. Round 1. Punching mediocre square in the jaw. My drive is expanding. From God’s ears to yours. Enjoy.”
Solo music aside, Dixson has collaborated with Beyoncé on a number of songs, including “Be Alive” from the King Richard soundtrack. The marching anthem earned him Best Original Song nominations at the 2022 Golden Globes and Oscars.
He later worked on two fan favorites (“Virgo’s Groove” and “Pure/Honey“) lifted from her seventh studio album, Renaissance.
