Durand Bernarr does not want him and his partner to compete for the mirror on his new song “Lil Bit,” produced by ActzMusiq.
Over a snappy, lightweight beat and throwback synths, Bernarr is on the prowl for someone who isn’t stuck on vanity. It’s not flattering to him. Instead, his eye is someone with more of a plain face, bluntly singing, “need my baby a little bit ugly.”
“For some of us, while we’re open to a lot of things, we also have things about a person that we prefer. Essentially, admitting our preferences sometimes stem from trauma,” says Bernarr.
“Lil Bit” is the lead single from Bernarr’s upcoming sophomore album, Wanderlust. The project, which consists of 12 tracks, is scheduled to release later this year.
“Lil Bit” follows his successful Step Into My Office Tour, which had a series of sold-out shows this August.

Bernarr teased new music he was working on in a recent interview with Rated R&B. It was birthed after scrapping the idea to release a companion project, or as he described a “dessert EP,” for his 2020 album Dur&.
“I decided to give that a backseat and put all the energy into the new project,” he explained. “I wanted to get with a band here in LA and I wanted to go to Dallas and to play with my guys who I’ve been playing with in [Erykah Badu’s] band.
I went to Dallas. We booked out a session and cranked out like 14 joints in five hours. Now, I’m piecing together the stories that I want to tell and how I wanna tell them. The music is really beautiful.”
For the new material, Bernarr said he plans to “incorporate more of my comedic influences in the music.” He cited Bugs Bunny, Arnez J and Little Richard interviews are reference points.
Bernarr’s forthcoming untitled album will follow his acclaimed effort Dur&, which was featured in Rated R&B’s 30 Best R&B Albums of 2020.
Last year, Bernarr teamed up with Elijah Blake for his album The Neon Eon. He also joined Adam Ness on his project, Sagittarius, Vol. 2.
