Two-time Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Jazmine Sullivan has released “Stand Up,” a new original song she co-wrote with Oscar and Grammy-winning songwriter/producer D’Mile for Till. The song will play during the film’s final scene and end credits.

According to the press release, “Stand Up” provides a poignant voice for Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till, whose son was tragically lynched in 1955 for whistling at a white woman.

“I’m honored to be able to contribute to such a powerful film about such a historic and tragic moment in American history,” said Sullivan.

Director Chinonye Chukwu praised Sullivan’s songwriting and dedication to the new song. “It was a genuine dream come true to have Jazmine Sullivan pen and perform ‘Stand Up’ as the end credit song of Till,” said Chukwu.

“A passionate artist and activist, Jazmine delivers an anthem for justice and hope; one that ignites a fire to rise up for all people whose lives have been senselessly cut short because of America’s deep rooted and white supremacy.”

Till was directed by Chukwu. It stars Danielle Deadwyler as Mamie, along with Jalyn Hall, John Douglas Thompson, Tosin Cole, Roger Guenveur Smith, and EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg.

The movie premiered at the 60th New York Film Festival. It will hit select theaters on Oct. 14 and will make its nationwide debut on Oct. 28.

“Stand Up” is Sullivan’s second contribution to a motion picture this year. She provided an emotionally faithful cover of “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child” for Baz Luhrmann’s biopic, Elvis, which debuted in June. It, too, was produced by D’Mile.

Since taking home two Grammys in the R&B field in April for Heaux Tales and its platinum-selling single, “Pick Up Your Feelings,” Sullivan has been unstoppable.

Sullivan just collected her sixth top ten single on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart with “Hurt Me So Good.” The achingly lovely ballad appears on the deluxe edition of Heaux Tales, which was released in February. The album’s standard version was certified gold, with over 500,000 equivalent units sold late this summer.

In September, Sullivan teamed up with Emmy-winning music director and producer Adam Blackstone to reimagine Thelonious Monk’s “‘Round Midnight.” A week earlier, John Legend enlisted her for “Love,” a song lifted from his eighth studio album and Republic Records debut LEGEND.
